HTML

What is HTML?

HTML stands for Hypertext Mark-up Language. It is basically a language that instructs the computer on how to display elements on a browser. In short, HTML does not really do anything significant in terms of computer operation. It merely tells the computer how to display elements. Caveat emptor, as the Romans would say. Many would way that HTML really does not do anything but as a web designer, you should beg to differ! Even if HTML does not do anything, in terms of website design, the way pages are displayed on a browser matter a lot. When you are a web designer, image means a lot and when there is something related to image and presentation, it must be important to you.

HTML cuts across borders

Majority of websites today use the HTML format in their web pages. Web design software recognizes HTML as one of the major formats for any website development initiative. From Windows to the Macintosh, HTML is a very common format. From Internet Explorer to Opera, HTML is a highly recognized format. No matter where you go or what kind of software you use, when it comes to any webpage design task, HTML is important. If writers need pens to write then a web designer needs HTML to design. A writer may use a marker but the pen is still the most basic and is still the most obvious choice for writing. Although a writer may use a pen to entirely write a book, sometimes the writer must use illustrations to make the book more interesting. There has to be more than words when it comes to making a book come to life. HTML alone can not do the job of making a spectacular website.

HTML and the other tools that complement it

HTML alone can make web pages but in order to achieve feats in website design, more than HTML is needed. A lot of other tools that complement HTML are in widespread use today. XML or the extensible mark-up language is one of them. CSS or the cascading style sheet is another example that makes HTML pages more interesting to look at. There are several more languages out there that complement the HTML language. The bottom line is that every web designer must know HTML. It is like the first grade in school. It is like the first book in a series of chapters. HTML is a foundation of website design and it is essential that a web designer know how to use it.
